Our audience moodboard (Jennifer Skeel)

Our audience moodboard

The target audience of our film will be aimed at females ranging from young adults to the middle aged. We decided since the film has a romantic element to it that it would be more enjoyed by the female gender and the ages chosen were where the genre is most enjoyed. The pictures above our what we imagine our target audience would look like.

We plan our film to show realism to the audience because the opening will be based on a husband cheating on his wife with a mistress and so some of the audience may be able to relate to this. Also the film could have a hypodermic needle effect because some members of the audience may take this information and believe that all men our like this , which is a bad effect or even get the idea that they should become a mistress themselves.

This will help us with our own film opening because we have a clear idea on the look of our audience and who we will want our film to be aimed at. So when creating our film we can use this information to help us relate our film to our target audience.

Our Film mood board (Ellie Taylor)

The mood board will help us in filming because it helps our story line and the mise-en-scene that we want to include in the film opening.

Audience Questionnaire Answers Analysed (Gabrielle Chambers)

Question One. What story line would you stereotypically see in a Romantic Drama?

Out of the Three people we asked one person said that they would expect to see two people falling in love. The second person said that they would expect there would be love at the start of the film and then something happens to them. And then the Third person said they would expect to have a couple in love. Out of these answers we will be able to interpret them so we know what we would need to put in our romantic drama. So i know know that we must have Love in the film as this was the key thing that was mentioned in all answers.

Question Two. Who do you think a Romantic Drama is aimed at?

Out of the Three people we asked one person said that they believed that Romantic Drama is aimed at young people and upwards and mainly aimed at females, The second person said that they thought romantic dramas are aimed at middle aged women. And then the final person agreed with the second person saying that it should be aimed at middle aged women. Out of these answers we will be able to interpret who our target audience should be and as in two of the answers it said that the target audience is middle aged women i think this is what our target audience should be.

Question Three. What pace would you expect in a Romantic Drama?

Out of all three people we asked they all said that they would expect a slow paced. Therefore we have decided that our film should be slow. This would therefore would reflect the love building between the characters showing the audience what is going on in a simpler way.

Question Four. What type of Non-Dietetic sound would you expect to hear?

Out of the three people we asked the first person said they would expect a Romantic Drama to have pop/cheesy music. The second person said they would expect to hear romantic and slow music to allow tension to build. The third person then stated that they would expect to hear slow music in a Romantic Drama as most Romantic films have slow music as well as Drama films. After looking at these results I believe we should have slow and romantic music to open our film as this was the most popular result that appeared.

Question Five. What type of props would you see in a Romantic Drama?

The first person said that they would expect to see props with romantic connotations such as candles, flowers and chocolates. The second person said that they would expect to see a bed in our romantic drama. Finally the third person said that they would expect to see the restaurant setting as they believe this is they best way to portray romance. After looking at these results we prefer the final answer as it links in with our current ideas.

Question Six. Would a Romantic Drama be Independent or Mainstream?

All three of the results we obtain said hat they believed that a Romantic Drama should be Mainstream. Therefore after looking at these result we have decided our company should be mainstream as this is the one that is seen to be more popular in Romantic Dramas.

Question Seven. What type of characters would you expect to see in a Romantic Drama?

The first person said that they would expect to see a good looking female and male in the Romantic Drama. The second person said that they would expect to see either a female or male protagonist. Finally the third person said that they would expect to see good looking characters, like the first person. After looking at the results we believe we should have good looking characters in our Romantic Drama.

Question Eight. Would there be a Female Protagonist or a Male Protagonist?

The first person we asked said that their should be a Female Protagonist in our Romantic Drama. The second person we asked believed that it could be either a Male or Female. And then finally the last person believed that there should be a Male Protagonist. After looking at all of the results we've had back i believe we could chose either a female or a male to be the Protagonist and our Romantic Drama would still be successful.

Question Nine. Would there be a Damsel in Distress?

The first person we asked stated that their shouldn't be a Damsel in Distress in our Romantic Drama. The next person we asked said that there could be a damsel in distress as it would depend on the story line and who the protagonist is. And then finally the last person we asked agreed with the first person and they think that there shouldn't be a damsel in distress as they believe this is more common. After looking at our results i believe that we shouldn't have a damsel in distress as more people said it is less common.

Question Ten. Would there be a Happy or Sad Ending?

The first person we asked said they would expect a happy ending as well as the final person. However the second person said that there would be a sad ending as it is a drama film. After looking at the results we've found out that it is more common for their to be a happy ending however i do agree with the second person as it is still a dram so maybe there should be a sad ending.

Audience questionnaire (Ellie Taylor)

From deciding which genre we wanted our film opening to be, we thought that to convey the genre to the audience we wanted to find out what the audience expected from the genre for example the storyline to the film and what type of characters that would be in the film. This will help us understand more about the genre and the aim of the target audience; this will also help the audience because they will be able to understand the narrative of the film opening.

Group research into our genre (Jennifer Skeel)

Group research into our genre

Plot

Two people usually meet which develops into a relationship. Normally a happy ending where romance would develop, hit crisis pint and then go back to a good relationship. The drama element is obstacles that occur during the film. The audience have a sense of escapism when the characters deal without similar problems as the audience.

Camera shots

The typical camera shots used in romantic comedies are close ups and over the shoulder shots.

Close ups- these are most commonly used to show a characters emotions in a real life situation either good or bad news. This allows the audience to make a connection with the characters because the audience can relate to them.

Over the shoulder- this allows the audience to feel part or a conversation as if they are there and overseeing it and they get a better knowledge of a relationship as the conversation develops.

Editing

Editing in romantic comedies varies depending on the technique used. Editing helps show the mood during a film. Fast editing emphasises the drama element of the film is happening but slow implies a calm nature such as the relationship developing.

Sound

Non diegetic sounds- shows the mood of a film

Slow music- for the romantic side which creates a laid back atmosphere

Small amount of dialogue shows there is tension building  which shows that trouble is occurring or about to occur.

A voice over- this tends to me a female character because stereotypically they have more thoughts.

Mise-en-scene

Wedding bells/churches- weddings often occur in romantic dramas and this signifies love.

Flowers- flowers are often used at weddings and symbolise love, a rose may be used as a stereotypical flower used to represent love

Photos- this can show memories of a character happy or sad and this may show a previous or present relationship.

Clothing- this may be warm and comforting to show romance and may be certain colours to emphasise the romantic genre.

Lighting- high key lighting to show light and comfort highlights the romantic genre but the low key may be used when events turn to the worse which is more related to the drama genre.

Settings- beach/sunset/parks/restaurants these places are seen as stereotypically as a romantic places and places like parks are surrounded by nature, the audience can relate to these situations going on in the film. Then in restaurants this allows the characters to talk and allow the relationship to develop.

Characters

Contrast in characters, they change in looks some may dress well and look well but sometimes they may look slightly rough. Then characters usually come from two different social statuses but this makes the relationship more special and cuter to the audience.

In our film opening we intend to use close ups and over the shoulder shots to clearly show the emotions of the characters and to get the audience more involved in the film opening. Fast and slow paced editing to make it clear to the audience that things are going to take a bad turn. We will also use non-diegetic sound of music to clearly show the change in the storyline. Within mise-en-scene we will use a range of props like cutlery, plates, a menu and a bill to set the scene and add realism and costumes to show the clear characters being portrayed in our opening. With our film opening we have planned to use a sunset and base the film mostly at a restaurant to emphasise the romantic side of the genre. Lastly our characters will be well dressed and smart to highlight that the characters are all highly sophisticated and to set the scene for the audience.

Our Chosen Genre (Jennifer Skeel)

Our Chosen Genre

After discussing multiple choices of genres we have made the decision to choose to make a romance drama. We chose this genre because we couldn't decide between a romantic comedy or a drama so we decided to combine the two together. Also we all love dramas and romantic films so we wanted to combine the two so we all where happy with the final choice.

This will help us when creating our own film opening because we now can focus and research more on the conventions of romantic dramas, so we are able to take this information and use it to help us make our own romantic drama film.

Mindmaps on genres we could choose (Ellie Boyle)

These mind maps will help when it comes to creating our own film opening as we will know exactly what key things will intrigue and engage our audience throughout, through our chosen genre and what it includes.

The type of institution we will be (Ellie Boyle)

The type of institution we will be is mainstream. This is because the genre that we have chosen is a romantic drama and this means that there is a wide audience that are viewing both of these. We also believed that independent may also look too gritty for our film and by going mainstream we are enticing a far wider audience. 20th century Fox and universal are two types of examples of mainstream institutions.

By knowing what institution we are will help us when it comes to filming because we will know what the audiences demands from our film for instance the camera quality and technology would need to be as the audience expected.

What we know about film openings as a group (Ellie Boyle)

What we know about film openings
  • Sets the film
  • Location
  • Gives little away
  • Informs us of the genre
  • Lets us know who is in the film
  • Emphasises you to carry on watching
  • Engages the viewer
  • Introduces the characters
  • Hints at the narrative
  • Don't give everything away

It will help us when creating our own film as it would allow us to look at these other romantic dramas above and make sure we have also included our romantic drama theme and we can make sure of these by comparing our film to other ones.

Our Re-Make film opening (Gabrielle Chambers)

By making this re-make of superbad it has enabled us to look at the advantages of what we did and how helpful it is.

An advantage of making this re-make is that there was a large amount of editing involved in the creation of this re-make. This helped us as we where able to take on skills we haven't learnt before and learn new ways of editing things using the software iMovie. We will therefore be able to use these skills that we learnt from this process when we make our own film opening  as we can apply the new skills to the new project. Also another advantage is we filmed on an IPhone where as in our preliminary task we filmed on a camera. This enabled us to see which one is easier and therefore what one we will chose to use in our film opening.

Constructing our Re-Make (Gabrielle Chambers)

When we were given the choice on what film opening to re-make our group chose to re-make the film opening of Superbad. We chose Superbad as it looked interesting and it will involve a lot of editing which will allow us to improve our editing skills for our official film opening.

We used the dance studio at our school as it had the best lighting for how we wanted to portray the best representation of the film. As in the film opening of Superbad it has bright colours as the background and silhouettes of the character. So we focused the camera on the background so we looked more like silhouettes to have an even better representation.

Also we used iMovie to edit our re-make of Superbad. This enabled us to gain extra knowledge on how we edit and we will be able to use this knowledge when we make our film opening. When we where doing the editing process it took a long amount of time as we had to get the previous shot to match the new ones so we didn't confuse our audience. Also we had to add effects onto the footage to make it have to famous colours of the Superbad film opening.

Looking at how we made our film opening we will be able to use the key skills we learnt from our re-make and apply them to when we make our own.

Remake Timeline (Ellie Taylor)

We did a timeline for the actual film opening so that we were able to know the times in which we needed to put the titles and the timing for the music also the dance moves that were needed. The timeline helps us because it shows which institution is most important and what actors are more known to the audience.

The Re-make – the actual film opening (Gabrielle Chambers)

We chose to do Superbad as our re-make as we knew it would take a lot of editing and we felt this would be good to improve our editing skills ready for our actual film opening. We also though it be a good idea as it looked fun and interesting and we would be able to put our own spin on it as well.

The Re-Make (Ellie Taylor)

By looking at students remakes of films and the actual films it will help us understand the difference in genres and how they convey the genre to the audience. we-re doing a re-make of a film opening it gives us practise in filming and editing also adding titles and creating logos that will suit the genre. The re-make gives us ideas in which we could do for our film opening and whether or not a comedy would suit our group in filming. If dancing is the best to convey the audience and how we would do it to that would look realistic and professional.
