Looking into popular films that are successful within our chosen genre and looking at the similarities between the films for example Safe Haven is similar to the film The Lucky One because both posters of the film show the leading characters in the film and that there is a heterosexual relationship which shows that the genre is mostly mainstream. The budgets with both films are also high which means that they are able to target a larger audience as they use bigger and better technology which attracts a wider audience because they may be interested in the institution. For example the estimated budget for The Lucky One is $25,000,000 and the estimated budget for Safe Haven is $28,000,000.
By looking at the films that are popular in the genre it means that we are able to look at what conventions we need to include to attract a certain audience and use them to make sure that the film would be successful. It also helps us understand why we are a mainstream institution because most films in the genre are usually mainstream with a big budget.
