Attracting our target audience
When creating our own film opening we need to consider our genre and what elements are shown throughout a romantic drama and our target audience and what they would want or expect to see in a romantic drama.
When planning our film we have to consider the different camera angles, editing, mise-en-scene and the sound because they each can change what the genre of a film would be.
For example:
The camera angles in a romantic drama are typically close ups and establishing shots because this can highlight the romantic setting and show the real emotions of the characters.
Editing in a romantic film is usually slow paced but with the added drama side there may be a few fast paced edits in the film as well to show the difficult situation the characters have to deal with.
Within Mise-en-scene the location can have a big impact on the scene and genre because it would be different to a audience to see a spooky house to a peaceful sunset. Costumes can change how the audience see the film because if a character is wearing smart, attractive clothing compared to torn unappealing clothing then it can hint to the audience what the genre is of the film. Props also can change the genre of a film like a gun in a action film in comparison to flowers in a romantic
Then sound can change the atmosphere of the film either diegetic or non-diegetic. Diegetic sound can hint the genre to a audience by speech like 'I love you'. But then non-diegetic sound can be changed to show the genre too like slow paced music to show romance.
What will we do to attract our target audience?
In our film opening we will base the story about a Mistress, who is fooling around with another womans husband. This will attract our target audience because immediately the drama element is in there where the husband is cheating on his wife and the audience would not know from the start what is going to happen next. Also the romantic side of the genre will be shown through the start of the film showing a sunset and then straight into a romantic setting of a restaurant. Since the end of our film opening will be with the Mistress and husband meeting up, this will get our audiences attention because they would be intrigued to know whats going to happen next and will the husband get caught.
This will help me when creating our own film opening because we know all the different elements included in a romantic drama and what audiences want to see within a romantic drama. But also with a better understanding of what our storyline will be it will be easier to film and edit our piece to make this narrative come to life.
